Obstructive Sleep Apnea, sleep-disordered breathing, is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, including cardiovascular disease and cognitive impairment.

Both the prevalence and the awareness of breathing disturbances during sleep have increased markedly in recent years. This is partly due to advances in diagnosis and treatment but is also due to an increase in the prevalence of obesity and the age of the population. The current estimate of the prevalence of clinically significant Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is about 5%.

This increasingly common condition is treatable provided that it is recognized and managed appropriately. Fast Facts: Obstructive Sleep Apnea is the work of two experienced, international experts and is specifically targeted to primary care physicians to equip them with the knowledge needed to diagnose and manage this disorder successfully in cooperation with specialists.

Epidemiology and risk factors; Clinical presentation; Medical complications; Diagnosis; Medical management; Surgery; Future trends.

'The book is well designed and contains all important aspects of sleep apnea syndromes. Especially the professional presentation with key points and most important references allow a comprehensive overview. It is therefore ideally suited to make the general practioner familiar with the topic.'
German Sleep Society

'This concise and thorough text is an excellent introduction to sleep-disordered breathing for those at the level of medical student through to Advanced Trainee in Respiratory medicine, commencing training in Sleep and Thoracic Medicine.

It very neatly covers spectrum of disease including an excellent introductory chapter on epidemiology. The use of side tables for 'key facts' and 'key references' is also immensely valuable. It is well constructed and well targeted at the level of registrar in training. The use of appropriate diagrams, tables, charts and graphics is most instructive and adds to the value of the text. The chapter covering medical complications is outstanding.' Australasian Sleep Association
